Before I gush about this wine, I think it's important to set the stage that Yves Cuilleron is a highly acclaimed, marquee producer in the Northern Rhone... so the fact that this bottle is in the $20 range feels like theft!
This is a classic expression of Syrah, with great structure and balance without being overly extracted. Notes of fresh red fruit, black raspberries, green peppercorns, spice. Just INSANELY GOOD.
About the Producer
The Cuilleron domaine is a family estate that dates back to 1920. Founded by Yves’s grandfather Claude, the first domaine bottling was in 1947. Yves studied industrial design and engineering, but in 1984 he switched over to wine school in Macon and then spent a year with the Courbis family making St. Joseph and Cornas. He took over the family business from his uncle in 1987. Yves pays extra-special care to the quality of his vines, and rejects “off-the-shelf ideas”. His vision of viticulture is highly personal: not conventional, not organic, and not biodynamic. He has a simple philosophy: “Grow the best possible grapes.”
